18 November 2016
The directors and team at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa were delighted to have played a part by hosting the prestigious Grand Final of the 2016 Faldo Series international golf event in October for Sir Nick Faldo, in its 20th anniversary year.

Recognised as the only global amateur series for boys and girls, the Faldo Series was established in 1996, and expanded to Asia in 2006. Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching thousands of golfers each year. Past winners include Major Champions Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy.
After the 3 day event, during which Sir Nick stayed in one of the hotel’s luxurious Country Lodges, he commented, "Stoke by Nayland served as a most special site for our 20th Anniversary Faldo Series Grand Final. The hospitality shown to our players and our guests was second to none and the family and staff at Stoke by Nayland were very welcoming. The venue has delivered brilliantly. We made real history on that course and shared true camaraderie inspired by that setting. We are most grateful that Stoke by Nayland shared our commitment to growing opportunity through golf and developing tomorrow's champions."
The “history” made was a new course record of an amazing 64, achieved by 17 year old Frankie Capan from Minnesota, whose round included 9 birdies and led to Capan finishing joint 2nd overall. Jiri Zuska was the overall winner and the first ever Czech champion of the Series, closing out with a final round 70.
On the first day of the championship Sir Nick delighted a gathering of Stoke by Nayland Golf Club members when he staged a special masterclass at the Driving Range. The members had been invited as a thank you from the Club for offering their services as volunteer marshals at recent international events held at the award-winning venue. They were entertained by a humorous Sir Nick during nearing 2 hours of tuition and no doubt learned some top tips during that time.

Tom Williams, the Sports Presenter at BBC Look East TV, filmed the masterclass as part of his news report and Sir Nick was also interviewed via a live feed with the studio during the evening news broadcast, giving the event nearly 5 minutes of air time.
After the final day, a Gala Dinner with prize giving and a Q & A session was held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the event in the hotel’s stunning Devora Suite. Guests at the dinner included directors from the PGA, European Tour, Ladies European Tour Access Series and Mick McCarthy, manager of ITFC.

Sir Nick said, “I want to extend our thanks to all our supporters who make this possible for these young golfers. It was great for the players to have the PGA on board this week. The standard of play has been as good as I’ve seen in the many years I’ve been involved with youth golf.”
