Autumn Walks, Golf & Spa: Three Ways to Unwind

As we step into autumn, the countryside takes on warmer tones and pulling on your walking boots and heading into the countryside, spending a few satisfying hours on the fairway, warming up with a long lunch, or sinking into a spa treatment while the landscape changes outside sounds far more appealing than rushing from one thing to the next.

Set within the Dedham Vale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Stoke by Nayland Resort is made for autumn escapes. With countryside on your doorstep, two championship golf courses, Peake Spa, tempting dining options and comfortable accommodation, you can make your break as active, sociable or relaxing as you like.

So, what does your perfect autumn getaway look like? Are you The Adventurer? The Golfer? Or The Relaxer?

Choose your escape – or mix and match all three!

The Adventurer: Walk, Play & Explore

Autumn is made for exploring. The air is cooler, and a good walk can make everything else feel a little less urgent. Whether you’re travelling solo and fancy some time to yourself, heading out as a couple, or getting a group together for a countryside adventure, the Dedham Vale offers plenty of ways to stretch your legs and see more of the landscape.

With more than 90 square kilometres to explore, there are routes to suit everything from a relaxed stroll to a longer day in the countryside. You never need to travel far to find somewhere beautiful.

A great place to start is the approximately 1.5-mile circular route between Apple Tree Lodges and Stoke by Nayland Resort, taking in lakes, woodland and tree-lined lanes. From there, country lanes and footpaths open up towards Leavenheath, Stoke by Nayland and the surrounding countryside.

For a longer wander, explore some of the local routes around Leavenheath, including the Kingsland Walk, Wildlife Walk, Lanes and Lakes and Orchard Walk. Around nearby Nayland, you can follow the River Stour and discover historic buildings on the Historic Nayland route or take a longer route towards Wissington.

Additionally, there’s Constable Country, where the landscapes inspired one of Britain’s most celebrated landscape painters. Head towards Flatford and Dedham to experience the quintessential Suffolk and Essex countryside that appeared in John Constable’s paintings, with meadows, waterways, historic buildings and wide-open views providing a spectacular backdrop.

With changing foliage, open views and the chance to simply put some distance between yourself and your everyday routine, pack a flask, bring the camera, gather your favourite people, or simply head out on your own and enjoy some uninterrupted time outdoors.

When you’re ready to warm up, we are here, ready and waiting for you.

The Golfer: From Walking Boots to Golf Shoes

For some, the perfect autumn escape begins and ends with a tee time.

Once you’ve had your fill of countryside air, swap your walking boots for golf shoes and head out onto one of our two championship courses. Cooler temperatures, quieter fairways and autumn scenery make this an especially enjoyable time of year to play.

The Gainsborough course stretches to 6,321 yards and combines undulating terrain with four lakes, creating a challenging but rewarding round. Keep an eye out for the 10th hole, before tackling the brilliant par-three finish at the 18th.

Prefer your golf framed by trees and natural water features? The Constable offers a different character, with its wooded setting and scenic layout. Its finishing hole is certainly one to remember, with a bold drive over a large lake bringing you towards the green beside the Sports Bar.

Whether you’re a regular golfer, returning to the game after a break, or picking up a club for the first time, there are plenty of ways to make golf part of your autumn escape. Practise your swing on our covered driving range, sharpen your game on the practice areas, browse the Pro Shop or test yourself on the indoor golf simulator. Buggy hire is also available, making it easy to tailor your round to your plans.

Our Golf Facilities

Take Your Game Up a Level

Autumn is also a great time to work on your game.

Stoke by Nayland Resort is home to the James Andrews Golf School, with onsite PGA and EGTF professionals offering coaching for golfers at different stages of their game. Beginners can build confidence through introductory coaching with us, while more experienced players can focus on technique, consistency and specific areas for improvement.

For a more personalised experience, one-to-one coaching can be tailored around your ability, goals and expectations, with technology including Flightscope Radar and SkyPro used to analyse different aspects of your game.

Travelling with friends? Group coaching is available too, with courses for groups of up to eight, including mixed and women-only options. There are also residential golf coaching packages, making it possible to combine tuition, time on the course and a stay at the resort.

So, whether you aim to break 100, find your swing again or simply enjoy a golfing weekend with friends, there’s plenty of opportunity to make progress while you’re here.

From Final Putt to Food & Drinks

Whether you’re looking for a delicious breakfast before heading onto the golf course or looking to relax and unwind after a day on the green, our Sports Bar provides an informal setting for a post-round drink and something to eat, with live sports on screen and a range of menu options full of classic favourites.

In the morning, enjoy a hearty full English to set you up for the day, your favourite “something on toast”, a filling bap with fried egg, sausage, bacon or a mixture of all three, alongside a range of lighter options, from porridge, waffles or teacakes.

For lunch or dinner, tuck into juicy burgers, club sandwiches, classic jacket potato, alongside a range of light bites. When the autumn air is crisp but inviting, take your drink or meal outside onto the terrace and enjoy views across the golf courses.

For something made for sharing, Slice serves stone-baked pizzas on the all-weather Sports Bar terrace. Choose from favourites such as margherita, spicy Mexican or smokehouse BBQ, with 8-inch and 12-inch pizzas making it easy to order a few for the table.

However, if you're ready to sit down and make an evening of it, Lakes Restaurant offers a fine dining experience. Savour lighter options, like chicken Caesar salad, chicken supreme or fish and chips, or go all out with a beef Wellington, a 10oz ribeye steak or 16oz chateaubriand designed for sharing.

If one day of golf isn't enough, make a proper break of it. Our golf stays range from one or two nights, with a range of golf and spa options available too.

Make it a Group Escape

Autumn is great when there’s someone to share it with. Bring your golf buddies for a golf day or golf weekend on the fairways, gather the family for a countryside break, or round up a group of friends and build an itinerary around everyone’s idea of fun. At our hotel, one person can tee off while another heads to the spa. A couple can disappear for a countryside walk while friends enjoy a leisurely breakfast. Everyone can reconvene later for drinks, dinner or Afternoon Tea and compare notes on the day.

For larger groups, our spacious lodges offer a particularly appealing way to stay together. Set within 300 acres, our contemporary, eco-friendly self-catering lodges combine open-plan living spaces with spacious wooden terraces overlooking the surrounding countryside.

One-bedroom apartments sleep up to two, while two-bedroom apartments can accommodate up to six. For bigger get-togethers, our lodges can be combined into larger three- and four-bedroom holiday homes, with the wider accommodation offering space for groups of up to 32 guests across the site.

Inside, you’ll find everything you need for a comfortable self-catering stay, including fully equipped kitchens, open-plan living and dining areas and spacious terraces.

Best of all, you’re never far from the action. The golf courses, spa and dining facilities at Stoke by Nayland Resort are just a short walk or drive away.

It means everyone gets their own version of an autumn getaway, without anyone having to compromise.

The Relaxer: Spa, Treatment & Afternoon Tea

If your ideal getaway involves switching off rather than squeezing more into the day, make Peake Spa your first stop. Ease into the cooler season with time in our heated indoor pool, steam room, sanarium and bubbling Jacuzzi, or simply settle into a lounger with a good book and let the hours slow down.

Spoil yourself with a range of treatments on offer, from a soothing full-body massage after a busy few months, a back, neck and shoulder treatment, a facial tailored to your skin’s needs, or one of our specialist body treatments, including Rasul Mud Therapy and Hammam Rituals. Nail treatments are also available if you’re in the mood for a little extra pampering.

There’s something particularly satisfying about stepping into a warm, peaceful spa as the temperature drops outside.

Make Time for Afternoon Tea

Once you’ve finished your treatment, there’s only one thing left to do: settle in for Afternoon Tea. Stay in your robes, get seated at your reserved table in Peake Bistro and enjoy classic savoury sandwiches, freshly made scones and tempting sweet treats, accompanied by tea or coffee. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available, so there’s no need for anyone to miss out.

Almost all of our Spa Day packages combine treatments and poolside access with Afternoon Tea or a light lunch, plus a glass of prosecco.

If a single day with us feels far too short, turn your spa day into an overnight escape. Wake up slowly, enjoy breakfast and make the most of the countryside before heading home – rather than watching the clock all afternoon.

Your Autumn, Your Escape

The beauty of an autumn break at Stoke by Nayland is that you don’t have to choose just one experience. Start the morning as The Adventurer, heading out into the Dedham Vale while the countryside is fresh and quiet. Become The Golfer in the afternoon with 18 holes on one of the championship courses. Then finish the day with dinner, drinks and somewhere comfortable to sleep.

The next morning? Become The Relaxer. Spend a few hours at Peake Spa, enjoy a treatment and linger over Afternoon Tea before heading home feeling like you’ve actually had a break. This flexibility works particularly well when you’re travelling with other people, as you can make your escape truly yours.

If you're planning an autumn escape in 2026, there are seasonal offers worth exploring. The current Autumn Dinner, Bed & Breakfast Offer includes an overnight Club Room stay, two-course dinner, full English breakfast and access to poolside facilities, with selected dates running from October into November. For golfers, our Autumn Saver Golf Break includes two rounds of golf, a one-night Club Room stay, a three-course dinner, full English breakfast and poolside access, with selected October 2026 dates available.

Come for the countryside. Stay for the golf. Book the spa. Bring your partner, your family, your friends, or simply come on your own and enjoy some well-earned time away.
